What Is Saga?

Saga is an ongoing science-fantasy comic series written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples, published through Image Comics. It launched in 2012 and quickly became one of the most talked-about comics of the decade — and for good reason. But does it live up to its reputation?

The Story at a Glance

Saga follows Marko and Alana — soldiers from two warring alien races who fall in love, desert their armies, and go on the run across a vast, imaginative universe with their newborn daughter, Hazel, who also narrates the story.

The setup sounds simple, but the execution is anything but. Vaughan uses the backdrop of intergalactic war to explore deeply human themes: parenthood, love across cultural divides, the cost of war on civilians, and what it means to build a family in a world that doesn't want you to exist.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • Fiona Staples' artwork — Her painted style is unlike anything else in mainstream comics. Every alien world feels genuinely alien, and every character has a distinct, expressive face.
  • Diverse, complex characters — From the lying cat (a feline that can detect lies) to the mercenary known as The Will, even side characters feel fully realized.
  • Unpredictability — Saga refuses to follow genre conventions. Characters you love die. Relationships evolve in unexpected directions. No one is safe.
  • Mature themes handled thoughtfully — The series tackles sexuality, addiction, grief, and trauma without being gratuitous.

Potential Drawbacks

  • The mature content (nudity, violence, drug use) is not for everyone or every age group.
  • The story went on hiatus for a couple of years, which frustrated dedicated readers.
  • Some story arcs feel slower than others — the series rewards patient readers.

The Verdict

If you've never read a comic before and want one series that proves the medium can tell stories no other format can, Saga is it. It's emotional, visually stunning, politically charged, and genuinely surprising. The hype is earned.
