Two Formats, One Medium

Comics come in many shapes, but two of the most popular collected formats are manga and graphic novels. New readers often wonder: what's the actual difference? Are they interchangeable? And which should you start with? This guide answers all of that clearly.

What Is Manga?

Manga refers to Japanese comics and print cartoons. The word "manga" (漫画) simply means "comics" in Japanese. Key characteristics include:

  • Read right to left — Most manga is printed in the original Japanese reading direction, so you start from what Western readers consider the "back" of the book.
  • Black and white interiors — Most manga volumes use black-and-white artwork. Full color is relatively rare and often limited to covers or special editions.
  • Serialized in magazines first — Manga typically runs in weekly or monthly anthologies (like Weekly Shonen Jump) before being collected into volumes called tankōbon.
  • Genre breadth — Manga covers every conceivable genre: romance, horror, sports, cooking, history, action, slice-of-life, and more.
  • Demographic categories — Manga is marketed by demographic: shonen (young male), shojo (young female), seinen (adult male), josei (adult female), and kodomomuke (children).

What Is a Graphic Novel?

A graphic novel is a longer, book-format comic work — typically a complete, standalone story or a collected arc from an ongoing series. Key characteristics:

  • Read left to right — Standard Western reading direction.
  • Often in full color — Particularly in superhero and mainstream graphic novels, though many literary works use black and white.
  • Designed as a single story — A true graphic novel (as opposed to a "trade paperback") is created to be a complete narrative, not a collection of previously published issues.
  • Wide stylistic range — From superhero blockbusters to literary memoir, the graphic novel format encompasses enormous creative variety.
